Great Notley Under 11 Cross Country Races


On Saturday, sixty young athletes from around the county took part in an Under 11 Cross Country at Great Notley Country Park.

The two races were organised by Braintree & District Athletic Club.

The 2 kilometre, two lap, course had some challenging sharp hills, and the two races were run in bitterly cold temperatures, exacerbated by a biting easterly wind.v

The Girls' race was won by Sinead Clark of Benfleet Running Club, who led from the start and finished with a fine sprint to finish well ahead in the field.

She was followed by Meghan Samuels of Alleyn Court School with Katy Fenner of Basildon AC in third.

Braintree & Distrcit Athletic Club has six runners in the race.

Courtney Gordon was first home for the club in 5th, with Rebecca Moloney 6th, Meghan Marchbanks 7th, Abigail Clark 20th, Maria Caulfield 22nd and Madi Fribbens 29th.

The Boys Race was a close run thing with Lewis Harknett of Harlow AC leading Braintree's Luke Allen from the start.

Despite feeling unwell, Allen took up the lead at the three quarters stage, and just held on as Harknett closed on him with a fine finish.

Allen's club team mate, Alexander Scott-Bell ran a fantastic race to finish in third.

There were notable performances from other Braintree Athletes: Oscar Grey 10th, Craig Chambers 12th, Isaac Lewin 14th, and Elliot Coulson 20th.

Overall it was a great sporting event for all these youngsters, who all received well deserved certificates for braving these tough conditions.
