Luke and Bethany in Essex Schools Cross Country

20/03/2011

Braintree Juniors Bethany Turner and Luke Allen represented Earls Colne Primary School in the Essex Schools Cross Country Year 5/6 Competition at Hylands Park.

Hosted by the Essex Schools Athletics Association, with 55 schools across Essex, almost 800 competitors took part in what proved once again to be an extremely popular event.

Luke Allen took part in the year 6 boys' 1900 meter race with a record breaking 218 competitors this proved to be extremely tough race.

The mass start was too much for many of the smaller boys including Luke, who were pushed to the ground as the whistle blew at the start.

Unfortunately, Luke found himself trapped for the first 300 metres of the race not able to push his way through the crowd.

Once free however, he flew ahead and ran well but due to the short distance of the race was never going to be able to catch the leaders.

He did however make super ground to finish a very respectable 7th position overall - in the end only 12 seconds behind the winner.

Bethany Turner took part in the year 6 girls' 1800 metre race with approximately 185 runners this was also a popular race.

She had a good start and maintained a strong pace all the way round to finish first for her school in a very credible 22nd position overall.
