Highwoods Cross Country

Braintree & District Athletic Club had a strong team of 16 runners at the second Mid Essex League Cross Country of the season at Highwood, near Writtle.

Blue skies with low temperatures greeted the 170 runners from various clubs around the area, with the mid morning sun thawing most of the icy puddles on the route.v

The course itself was very hilly, around fields and in woods, with a number of descents and river crossings, matched by testing climbs.

For the ladies, Josie Sheffield was first Braintree runner home, coming tenth out of the 62 runners.

She was followed by Claire Gordon, 17th, Shelley Wray, 23rd, Dorinda Fribbens 32nd and Chloe Cockell 33rd.

This performance gave Braintree Ladies' Team a very fine fourth place out of the 7 teams.

The Men's Team improved to fifth position, with Lee Cousins first man home for the club in 42nd place out of 106 runners.

He was closely followed by Ross Boyer 46th, David Reaves, 47th, Simon Mennell 49th and Myles Coulson in 50th.

Matthew Faires came 67th, Trevor Sibley, 68th, Ryan Askew, 73rd, Joe McEwan, 81st, Mark Fribbens, 84th and Kevin Cockell 104th.
